Even number

March 6, 2007

So, what’s an even number? Go ahead, try to explain it in your own words. I’ll wait.

When I was first asked this question I have to admit, I had no idea how to explain it. To think, we learn 2 + 2 = 4 at birth and some still have no clear understanding of what an even number is.

To get an understanding, let’s declare a variable k to be any randomly chosen integer and n be our mysterious even number.

n = 2k (our mysterious even number is equal to 2 multiplied by any randomly chosen integer).

This basically means that n is a multiple of 2. So, an even number is any number multiplied by 2.

Can anyone guess how to define an odd number?

  1. Odd numbers are

n = 2k -1. I.e. any integer that is 1 less then an even number is an odd number.

  2. Good job. You’d be amazed at how many people don’t know that.
