simple online conversion tool

May 31, 2007

OK, so awhile back I posted on how to steal a video from any website (plus how to get one off of youtube and friends). There are tons of ways to get what you want these days, and this is just another one.

This site allows you to convert pretty much any file format you want. All you do is upload (or link to) the file you want, pick your format, provide your email (so they can send you the link once it’s done converting), then download your file! YAY! It’s that simple.
This site rocks: www.zamzar.com

Oh yeah, click on any of their ads to keep them in business. You don’t really have to buy anything from their sponsors, clicking is enough. And by the way, I am in NO way affiliated with zamzar.com, I just think its a cool site that is worth checking out.
Enjoy! :)

get inspired

May 30, 2007

Here is a new category that I call websites to see. It’s basically websites that I’ve come across that I particularly like. My first site is one that I discovered a long time ago. It has definitely helped me out getting some inspiration for my own work. It’s a site that highlights other websites that are worth looking at.

So, here it is : www.bestflashanimationsite.com.

super quick tip: lie, it will save you.

May 23, 2007

So you get a new project to do from the boss (or a side project) and they ask you how long it will take. You figure (depending on the project of course) that it will take you two weeks to complete.

Just because this number sounds good in your head doesn’t really mean that it will be done in two weeks. Always add more time to the time you come up with!! If you think it will take two weeks, you say it will take four. Add whatever time you need to, but just make it believable. Poop happens and you don’t want to become the diaper that has to hold it. I’m sure your clients will be much happier if you get it done before the time you originally said. You look good, they are happy, and no one gets hurt.

make an error page, geez.

May 22, 2007

Most of you have seen it, and developers should dread it. When your browsing the net and you find a site who’s page you are requesting is missing, you’ll see this infamous page (depending on your browser of course):
Page cannot be found

Please, for the sake of your viewers make a custom error 404 page.

super quick tip: save it as a .gif

May 21, 2007

Not everyone has a fast connection. Heck, for some of you this page is still loading up. When you have an image that your going to use for the web, and there isn’t that many colors in the image, save it as a gif. It takes up less time to load because the file is smaller then a jpeg. You could be fancy and save it as a .png, but .gifs are still smaller. Now, if your bettin’ on this image and you want it to make an impression, don’t be cheap and save it as a jpeg. But, if you can spare the pixels (menus, small images, ads, etc), then a .gif is your file.

Because it’s Friday. For most people, Friday is the end of the work week. It’s a day when you can dress down and take it easy. It marks the beginning of the weekend. So to my readers (all 3 of you), appreciate your Friday’s and be happy! Now here is a pretty rainbow.

super quick tip: sample on a new layer

May 4, 2007

If you have an image that you want to fix up (taking out white spots, removing objects, etc.), you’ll use the sample tool (in photoshop of course). The shortcut is ‘S’.

Instead of sampling on the same layer as the image (as most people do), create a new layer and use it there instead. This way you can preserve the image and have more control over the sampling. Make sure that you have the “sample all layers” option selected, this allows you to use the pixels from the image in the layer below (thus preserving the original!).

May 2, 2007

I’d like to thank all of the spam I recently received on this blog.  It’s good to know you care. Now, get a real job.
