Looking for a specific file to download? Try using torrents to get what you want. First, you’ll need a client application like bittorrent. Once you have this bad boy installed, it’s time to start finding what you want.
But before you get all excited, torrent files usually come zipped or in .rar files, so you will need a winrar reader. Then check out sites like isohunt, torrentazos, or demonoid. Or you can just to a search and find tons of sites that offer this sweet service.
Once you find what you want, click to download it. Your torrent reader will open, then immediately afterwords it will ask you to save it somewhere on your computer; pick a spot and start downloading. And remember sharing is caring.
Never-mind how long it took to think of the title for this article, we are here today to talk about a serious issue; contrast.
I see a lot of websites that don’t have enough contrast between text and background color. I know that there are some people who like the whole dark look of a black background and blue text (or any other horrible combination). Let me be the first to tell you; don’t do it, it looks stupid and no one can understand it. Please stop.
An argument can sometimes get nasty. When your trying to get your point across, sometimes feelings get hurt. This can be especially true if you get really emotional about it and start naming your variables illogical names.
Arguments (in programming of course, also known as parameters) are “passed” as inputs into functions. They basically help functions do their job. Without this independent variable, a function is pretty much all looks. Don’t get me wrong, functions really don’t need inputs, but it does put the fun in function. (OK, that was bad. Sorry)
Think about an argument like a debit card, no matter which card goes into an ATM (function), the same thing is gonna happen; you put your card in, type your pin and then have access to an account.
In order to get what you want (a specific database value, a simple arithmetic calculation, validation of a form input explicitly accepting numerical values from 0-9 that are no more then 5 characters long!) –first get to know how your argument needs to be (datatype, size, etc), then work with it.
Watch out MS office users, humongoid company Google revealed that they are releasing their version of office based software. They are currently offering a free version of the application for gmail users. They plan to make it less expensive then MS office and hope to have users switch over. So for $50 a year, you can pretty much to the same thing MS office does (and cheaper).
Google Docs is said to be able to support most handheld devices and expect to expand this branch of Google later this year. Will there ever be a day where Google is the Internet?
I get that they are on their mission to organize the world’s information and whatnot, but now their attempting to step into applications that are Microsoft’s bread and butter; now those are fighting words. What’s next, a Google operating system?
It’s really troublesome as a web designer to think that your page won’t look the same on everyone else’s machine as it does on yours. All that hard work placing your elements in just the right place might just be a waste (unless of course your good at CSS, then your worries will be cut down to a few.) I recommend downloading Firefox and testing your webpage there (as well as Internet Explorer, duh). Of course there are other browsers that are out there you should test you web pages on, but those two are the big ones.
Browsershots.org is a sweet site that lets you preview how your work will look on other browsers. You can also try IE Web Renderer to test out how your designs will look in different versions of Internet Explorer. You can also get some extensive information on formatting your work for other browsers here.
As the world turns we are progressing to a point where literally everone will be plugged into the Internet. Not all browsers get along. We just have to take it one day at a time and learn to play nice with others.
Multi-billionare Bill Gates thinks that kids should have a limit on their Internet time. I happen to agree. He has a 10 year old daughter (who will inherit a chunk of his fortune) that he limits to 45 minutes for Internet use time.
Being such a slave to the Internet as I am (and most of you), you know you can’t get diddly done in 45 minutes. But, I guess if your 10 years old, you don’t really have that much going on anyway. Kids should do their research the old fashion way; books.
Although it’s almost impossible to track the ages of who’s on the Internet, this site provides some interesting stats across the world.
With a few apps under my belt, I’d like to think that I know a few things about user interaction. Now, I’m not claiming to be a guru or whatnot, I’m just saying this is what I’ve learned.
When designing a gui (graphical user interface), you really have to be careful. Every element has to be crystal clear as to what your objectives are. If your creating a form, make sure that you have descriptive titles next to what you want the user to type.
If (this one is obvious) you want them to type their first name, then type “First Name” next to the input field. If it’s an email address your asking for…, I’ll let you guess this one on your own. Read the rest of this entry ?
A Canadian hacker broke into a former L.A. judge’s machine to discover loads of kiddie porn. He then reported his findings and now (6 years later) the judge is facing up to 33 months in prison. Wow, so I guess hacking sometimes does pay off. Use your power for good, people.
Setting a password for anything is such a daunting task. You want to make it strong enough so no one can guess it (or crack it with a script, which is still probably possible anyway). But then at the same time you want to make it easy enough to remember.
Like everyone else who uses a computer, you probably have more than one account where you have to use a password. It’s not the best idea to use the same password for multiple accounts, it just makes it easier for anyone to obtain. So what do you do?
A good start to set a password would be to do a search for a random password generator. This way you can be completely oblivious of what password you want to choose. Once you finally choose a password your comfortable with, it’s time get that memory working.
Hybrid super company Adobe officially released their long awaited Photoshop Lightroom. For those (unlike myself) who can take great pictures, this software is a big deal. With the recent release of Bill Gate’s recent love child, Window Vista, Adobe admits that it’s their not ready to play together. Hold on to your copy of XP folks.
Check out some videos of what this new addtion to the Adobe dynasty can do.
Robert Adler is co-responsible for giving us couch-butt. He is why the inventor of the straw had the courage to say “I don’t feel like drinking from the cup, I’m too lazy”*. Robert was the co-inventor of the remote control; the single most important gadget in a home. He has died at 93.
With all of the free video content on the web, will the remote ever rest in piece?
Ever wanted to steal borrow a video from a webpage but didn’t know how? Here’s a little trick that will make your mother wear combat boots.
First find a page of a video you want. Then right click on the page select “view source” (you should always view the source of any page that your interested in; sometimes developers leave some good notes on what is being done in their script).
Once here, try and find the location of the video in the script; use control+F to bring up the “find” option. Search for common video extensions like “wmv”, “mov”, etcetera . Once you find your video’s location, copy the complete URL into notepad. Sometimes you’ll see that the location of the video starts with “../”. This just means go one level up in the directory structure (which could just be the domain name itself).
So, you have your complete location pasted in notepad and your ready to borrow. I hope by now most of you know a bit of HTML. Simply create a page with the basic HTML tags needed to create a page. Then make a link on the page using the destination you found as the href. View your page in your browser and right click on the link and select “save target as” and vuala.
Of course, if all else fails and you still want the video. Get firefox and download the following extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3590/. This will get what you want in seconds. As an alternative, check out, http://vixy.net/; just copy and paste a youtube address, and it’s your’s.
